1.0 Introduction
To ensure a safe, secure, and trustworthy community, DirectStay requires all Hosts to undergo identity verification and, where applicable, background checks before listing a Property on the platform. This policy outlines the verification steps, background check requirements, and the consequences of failing to meet DirectStay's security standards. By registering as a Host on DirectStay, you agree to comply with this Host Verification & Background Check Policy.
2.0 Host Verification Process
2.1 Required Verification Steps
Before listing a Property, all Hosts must complete the following mandatory verification steps:
Identity Verification
Provide a valid government-issued ID (passport, driver's license, or national ID). Complete selfie verification to match the submitted ID.
Phone & Email Verification
Provide a valid phone number and complete verification via one-time password (OTP). Confirm a valid email address to receive account-related communications.
Bank Account Verification (For Payouts)
Provide bank account details to receive payouts. DirectStay may request proof of ownership for the account to prevent fraud.
Property Ownership or Authorization Check
Hosts must provide documentation proving ownership or legal authorization to rent the Property (e.g., rental agreement, mortgage statement, utility bill).
Video Call Verification (For High-Value Listings)
Some Hosts may be required to complete a live video call with DirectStay's verification team to confirm identity and discuss Listing details.
2.2 Additional Verification for High-Risk Accounts
DirectStay may request additional verification from Hosts if:
- The account is flagged for suspicious activity or inconsistencies.
- The Host has a history of cancellations, disputes, or chargebacks.
- The Property is located in a high-risk jurisdiction with regulatory concerns.
Failure to provide the requested verification documents may result in account suspension or Listing removal.
3.0 Background Check Policy
3.1 When Background Checks Are Required
Hosts may be required to pass a background check before listing on DirectStay, particularly if:
- They are hosting multiple Properties or a high-value Listing.
- They are applying for Superhost status or premium placement.
- They are operating in jurisdictions where background checks are legally mandated.
3.2 What the Background Check Includes
Where applicable, DirectStay may conduct a background check that reviews:
- Criminal history records (limited to serious offenses that impact guest safety).
- Fraud or financial crimes related to short-term rentals.
- Sex offender registries (where permitted by law).
- Identity fraud or alias searches.
Note: Background checks are conducted in compliance with local laws and regulations. DirectStay does not automatically disqualify a Host based on minor or unrelated offenses.
3.3 Background Check Disqualifications
A Host may be denied access to DirectStay if the background check reveals:
- Violent crimes, sexual offenses, or fraud convictions within the past 7 years.
- Identity fraud or attempts to use false information during verification.
- Significant financial fraud or theft related to short-term rentals.
Hosts who fail the background check will receive a notification with appeal instructions, if applicable.
4.0 Privacy & Data Protection
4.1 How We Protect Your Information
All verification and background check data is handled securely in compliance with GDPR, CCPA, and other data protection laws. DirectStay does not store sensitive ID data permanently — once verification is complete, non-essential data is deleted. Background checks are conducted through third-party verification partners who comply with local privacy regulations.
4.2 Host Consent for Background Checks
By registering as a Host, you authorize DirectStay and its verification partners to conduct identity verification and, if required, a background check. You have the right to:
- Request a copy of your verification results.
- Dispute any incorrect information in your background check.
- Withdraw consent for future background checks (which may result in Listing removal).
5.0 Enforcement & Violations

- Suspend or permanently remove the Host from the platform for fraud or misrepresentation.
5.2 Appeals Process
If a Host believes they were wrongly disqualified due to a background check error, they may:

DirectStay will review appeals within 2 business days and issue a final decision.
